Natural solutions for restless legs

I was talking to a friend of mine at the weekend about restless legs syndrome and how to help combat them without the use of drugs. So this post is to help give a few ideas on which supplements and natural treatments can help.

The first 3 to try are potassium, magnesium and calcium as it is thought that a deficiency in these minerals can be responsible for the jumpiness associated with the syndrome. It is recommended taking a daily dose of 800 - 1000 milligrams of calcium, 300 milligrams of potassium and 500 milligrams of magnesium before bedtime. Restless legs can also be associated with a lack of iron - so taking an iron supplement is also worth considering and you can even get your GP to test your blood for iron levels.

In the people I have treated with this condition I have found that massage is very effective especially with the right blend of essential oils. The combination I use is Peppermint, Lavender, Chamomile, Ginger, Vetiver, Neroli, Frankincense and Myrrh as this helps to relax muscles, calm nerves whilst increasing blood flow. You should apply this oil to the legs massaging in an upward direction for 15 mins every evening together with some simple leg stretches. There are also a few lifestyle changes you should make:

  • Avoid caffeine and limit alcohol intake
  • Try not to nap during the day
  • Take plenty of exercise, walking, jogging or cycling is ideal

Obviously is always good idea to check with your Doctor especially if you are on any existing medication and to rule out any underlying causes.
